Black Shadow and Lunar

The pictures above present two polyptics from 2011. "Black Shadow"  is a composition of 4 different pictures from a burn field and a tree. "Lunar"  is the same composition, photographed at junk car areas. The polyptics were exhibited in Stockholm and Torshälla (Kvarnen - 05/03/2011 till 13/03/2011).

What doesn't kill, makes it stronger

In 2007, I decided to do a project focused on the dark side, showing things that we usually don't like to see. The result were images that are at the same time aesthetically attractive and repulsive. This was the way that I found to penetrate into a world of blood and violence. "What doesn't kill, makes it stronger" was taken in the dirty and bloody scenarios of the slaughterhouses and it's composed of 2 polyptics. The photographs were exhibited at the Laura Marsiaj gallery (Rio de Janeiro, 16 sept. - 15 okt. 2009).

In the Shadows of the Carnival

This serie of photographs I took between 2002-2005 in the streets of Rio de Janeiro during and off Carnival. The project was intended to present the rich cultural life and the diversity of characters that one may find at the streets in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Rio's carnival is a world famous event and I wanted to explore the mixture of people and styles around the streets. During these days you can go to street parades - together with Dragqueens, elderly people with masks and kids dressed up with their fantasies - in order to enjoy the music and celebrate life. The festival has it origins in ancient Greece when people celebrated Dyonisus, the Greek god of wine and festivity. But I also wanted to photograph what was happening in the streets when the festival does not take place. The result of this project was the individual exhibition "In the Shadows of the Carnival" which took place in Stockholm (Galleri Mowestor, 20/10/2005 to 14/11/2005).

Pippi in Rio

I was born in Stockholm and grew up in Rio de Janeiro with my parents (Swedish mother and Brazilian father) three brothers and one sister. I always had the opportunity to stay in contact with both cultures and I often traveled to Sweden to visit my relatives. I knew the adventures of Pippi since I was I child. Astrid Lindgren is very famous in Europe, but not in South America and Brazil, so my expectations towards the project Pippi in Rio was to pay a tribute to Astrid Lindgren doing a photographic essay based on her most famous character Pippi Longstocking.

But I needed to find a child-actress-model who looked similar to Pippi and who would like to play the role. I was lucky to find this wonderful girl, Anouk Van der Zee (her mother is Dutch and her father Brazilian), who was 9 years old at that time and also a great fan of Pippi. So we made a small production arranging the clothes, hair and some make-up and planned the places we would like to photograph like the Ipanema beach, at the Vidigal favela and in hers "Villa Villekula" inside the Tijuca Forest National Park. Some pictures were well planned like the one that she's lifting a big jiu-jitsu fighter (after all Pippi is the stronguest girl in the world) and the one she's playing capoeira with the kids, but others were just spontaneous like when she's jumping in front of the Ipanema beach or sitting in a sofa.

What I tried to do was to add aspects of the characters nature and personality to the images like strengness, friendship, detachment to formal rules, imagination and adventurous spirit. I couldn't do it without Anouk who was just perfect (pay attention to her expressions in the photos. She was not just a good model, but an actress who actually got involved in this project). The exhibition Pippi in Rio was shown in both countries, Brazil and Sweden. It was presented at the Centro Cultural da Justiça Federal (Rio de Janeiro, 25/01/2003 to 18/02/2003) and at the Junibacken (Stockholm, 24/08/2005 to 08/09/2005). In 2006 the photos was also shown in differents public librarys throughout Sweden.

Landscapes and Portraits

Fashion and Beauty

Obs: This video does not have a high resolution and works better in small screen.

When I go out on the streets I like to observe people - how they look, what they are using for accessory, how their hair looks like, their expressions - not judging, but simply enjoying their diversity. I always like to do portraits and working with fashion photography was something natural. In 1999 I worked in the newspaper O Globo (Rio de Janeiro) doing fashion editorials among others assignments and in 2001 I worked as an assistant to the fashion photographer Nana Moraes. In 2005 I've got a master's degree from UFRJ/ECO (Federal University of Communication in Rio de Janeiro) where I wrote a thesis about fashion photography. Most of these photos were made in 2007 for the Jornal do Brasil fashion supplement. Since february 2008 I'm living in Stockholm.
